Microsoft on Thursday announced two new AI-powered features for its Clipchamp video editor, which will help users enhance both the efficiency and creativity of their video content.

In a blog post published on Thursday, the Microsoft Clipchamp team said that they are bringing AI (artificial intelligence) to the app with two AI-powered editing tools: noise suppression and image background removal.

Noise Suppression

The first feature is noise suppression, which helps you reduce annoying background noise, such as a subtle hum or a loud sound, in your video or audio tracks and improves the clarity and quality of your voice without compromising.

“Bad audio can ruin a great video. Whether you want to eliminate a subtle hum or a loud distraction, noise suppression can do just that, without compromising the quality of your voice. Now, you can salvage audio recorded on a busy street, at home with the kids in the background, or even in cyclonic winds,” the Microsoft Clipchamp team wrote in its blog post.

To use this feature, upload your noisy audio into the Clipchamp video editor, click the Audio icon in the property panel, and select the “Noise suppression” tool. Then, toggle on the Noise suppression option, which will automatically eliminate the background noise and leave you with a crisp voice recording.

Currently, Noise suppression works with audio files. To enable noise suppression for video, you can separate the audio from video files.

Image Background Removal

Another feature is image background removal, which can remove the background of any image to create a green screen-like effect. With just a few clicks, you can remove the busy background from your images and help focus your audience’s attention on your content.

To use this, right-click any image and select the “Remove background” option. After deleting the existing background, you can substitute any video or image of your choice behind your image to create an entirely new look. The image background removal feature can also be applied to images with objects in the foreground to create your own stickers.

The two AI-based editing tools—noise suppression and image background removal—are currently being rolled out as a free update to Clipchamp’s personal and work account holders.

 Microsoft officially announced on Monday that it will deprecate and remove the Paint 3D app from its Store on November 4, 2024. After this cut-off date, the app will no longer be available for download through the Microsoft Store or for updates, marking the end of its availability.

For those unaware, the Redmond giant introduced Paint 3D — an updated version of the classic Windows Paint app — as part of its suite of creative tools with the Windows 10 Creators Update in 2017 to support 3D-compatible software and devices, including Microsoft’s Hololens and Windows Phones. It included a new interface, 2D and 3D painting features, support for layers and transparency, and other innovative tools like Magic Select and 3D Doodle.

Initially, Microsoft had plans to briefly replace the Paint 3D app with the original Paint app, but due to complaints about the new interface and features missing in Paint 3D, the Windows team decided to keep both apps, leading to a decline in Paint 3D’s popularity.

“Paint 3D is deprecated and will be removed from the Microsoft Store on November 4, 2024. To view and edit 2D images, you can use Paint or Photos. For viewing 3D content, you can use 3D Viewer,” reads a Learn Microsoft webpage.

Those who already have the Paint 3D app or new users who download and install the app before November 4, 2024, will be able to use it beyond this date and retain its functionalities, but no more updates or support will be provided. However, this app will no longer be offered for download after the cut-off date.

Although the Paint 3D app is retiring, the classic Microsoft Paint app for Windows 10 and 11 is getting updates and enhancements. New features like better pen and rubber possibilities and a tool size slider were recently added to the app.

 In what can be described as an embarrassing moment for Google, Gemini, the company’s generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, failed twice during the ‘Made by Google’ live event on Tuesday.

The event aimed to showcase Google Gemini’s Android capabilities, such as integration with Google Calendar, Tasks, and Keep. However, during the live streaming, Gemini AI failed to show results not once but twice.

The presenter, Dave Citron, decided to demonstrate how the new Gemini mobile AI features work within the Calendar app by offering it information through an image and asking the AI-powered chatbot to check if he was free this year for an upcoming Sabrina Carpenter concert in San Francisco.

“Check my calendar and see if I’m free when she’s coming to San Francisco this year,” Citron asked Gemini. While Gemini briefly loaded, it failed to respond, went back to the initial prompt, and asked the presenter to enter the details again.

The second time, too, Citron failed to seek an answer from the AI chatbot. “Let’s see the demo spirits are with us today,” said Citron while trying to make light of the situation. Thankfully, Gemini AI gave the results on the third attempt when the presenter switched to a different Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphone that informed him of his availability to see the “Espresso” singer live. The AI model took 20 seconds to conclude that Citron had nothing on his schedule.
